Msn Errors

MSN Messenger Error Code - 80048820

When you try and launch MSN Messenger and try to logon, you get an error message 80048820. A wild guess, your system time / date needs adjusting.
The Cause of Code 80048820

There are a variety of causes of this error:
1) Incorrect Proxy Setting for Internet Explorer.
2) softpub.dll may have become unregistered.
3) Your system clock may be showing an incorrect time (or date!).
4) Firewall problems.

The Solutions to MSN Error Code 80048820
Internet Explorer - Try removing Internet Explorer proxy server settings and go with the 'Automatically detect settings'.

1) Launch Internet Explorer, click "Tools" and then click Internet Options. From the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab. Click LAN Setting. Un check the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox. Finally positively tick: 'Automatically detect settings'.

2) Register softpub.dll.
Click Start (Button), and then click Run, type regsvr32 softpub.dll. Restart MSN Messenger.

3) If necessary, logon as a local administrator, set the computer's clock to the correct date and time. (Check on the internet if possible.)

4) Turn off the firewall temporarily. Check firewall settings such as Norton: "Block access to secure sites". If this cures the problem, make sure that Microsoft's MSN Messenger is allowed full access through your firewall.

Yes I'm having trouble too, like the posters above I've tried everything, nothing works it just keeps on coming up with that message. It's obviously the computer because it works OK on other machines connected to the same router. GRrrrr it really shouldn't bee this difficult!!!

After trying dozens of fixes and uninstalling and re-installing software which has opened up another can of worms, the fix for me was just unplugging the cable modem and plugging it back in. Problem solved instantly.

Anonymous said...

The steps are not helping.. I am not sure if this issue is linked to me getting a blank page when i try to logon to hotmail.com or not been able to upload or down load attachments on yahoo... Though i can read mails on yahoo.. but problem is with attachments..

Finally I got my WLM online INSTANTLY after reset MTU 1492 to my Belkin Wireless Router at 3:30am in Malaysia time 2007 October 21st. I am using Vista Business in my Dell XPS laptop. Of course, before this WLM sign in issue rectified I tried all possible methods suggested from the articles (OS time date synch; MTU set to 1400; apply PPoA in the router; IE6 Internet option; Delete registry key; OS DEP option; Remove WLM program; Firewall related), I was about planning to upgrade my router's firmware :)) or try to use another type of ASDL router for further testing.

Here is my PC configurations:
OS: Windows vista Business.
PC: DELL XPS laptop
Router: Belkin. F5D9630-4Av1_UK_1.00.04
Downstream: 2048 Kbps
Upstream: 512 Kbps

80048820 error with Belkin MTU resolved

Anonymous said...

People IF you have tried EVERYTHING and it dosen't work what i did was (For those of you who have limewire) I turned off limewire then tried again i fink it's something 2 do with certain programs wich bugz it but it worked for me so i hope it duz the same for you.:)

Anonymous said...

I had no showing errors, date and all other programs were absolutely fine. Only MSN wasn't working...
So, booted my LAN-hardwares, as well as DSL-router... Nothing.

Washed some dishes, and something came to mind: what if IE would be the problem? I had looked everything from IE, no proxy, nothing unusual. Though I usually use an other browser, this program is all too familiar due work.

Then I tried what had came to my mind: I put IE to offline. Then I ran the test in MSN again, and suprisedly there was an error now in the list. So, I put IE back to normal mode. Then ran MSN test again, and again it looked normal. Then tried to login, and it actually worked!

So, even if the test shows you don't have problems with IE, put it to offline mode. Run the test, there should now be the error we were looking for. And put IE back to normal mode. This option should be found from "Options" section quite easily.

Hope this will help some of you people out there!

Finally!!! i was nearly gone mad..for those who still can't get the problem fixed, try this...check your IE Security settings.

First, open IE, click the Tools menu, then Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and make sure that "Check for server certificate revocation" is unchecked.

also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL 3.0' is checked, then click OK.

start your msn & try log in..

this method fixed my problem..

Anonymous said...

thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
My firewall is Proventia - how do I see if that is causing the problem?
I am lost...

Anonymous said...

This worked for me!
First open a run window by clicking start, then run. Now, type the following command and press enter:

regsvr32 softpub.dll Wintrust.dll Initpki.dll Rsaenh.dll Mssip32.dll Cryptdlg.dll

If you use Windows XP you should open another run window after running the previous commands then type the following command:

regsvr32 Dssenh.dll Gpkcsp.dll Slbcsp.dll Sccbase.dll

I tried the re-register softpub.dll option and at first it did not work. Then I noticed that Messenger was still loaded in the task bar. I closed the program in the task bar and restarted it and it worked. Not sure if I really needed to re-register the dll. Seem to remember when I had the problem yesterday, I rebooted the pc and it started working as well.
